This model railway is an N gauge layout featuring the two railway stations of Leamington Spa – the GWR General Station and the LMS Avenue Station – and is set in the period around 1958-59.
The model railway is an analogue layout – the result of a decision to make the electrical side of the hobby easier and less expensive.
The centre piece of the layout is the GWR mainline that runs through the General Station which is at the front of the main viewing area. Express steam trains from Paddington passed through Leamington on their way to Birmingham Snow Hill, Wolverhampton Low Level and onwards possibly to Holyhead.
The LMS line demonstrates the changing times from steam to diesel with the use of diesel multiple units for the services from the Avenue Station to Coventry and Rugby.
The two stations were linked by:
(i) railway lines that enabled passenger services to connect across the different regional railway companies, as well as goods trains to exchange wagons within the extensive yards between the two stations; and
(ii) a subway for foot passengers to transfer between the two stations.
Both these connections have been modelled in the layout.
The scenery has been created in a late Autumn setting with the majority of the deciduous trees having lost their leaves.
This model is a representation of the stations and their surrounding areas. It is not an accurate scale model of these features due to the limitations of space: the baseboard measures just 12′ x 3.5′.
